On Saturday 8 February, we held our first ever light festival in Thamesmead. From 5pm to 9pm local residents enjoyed a magical illuminated walk through Butts Wood and Tump 53, two of Thamesmead’s beautiful green spaces. Local artists and international artists created a series of artworks from a dazzling display of disco balls, to a technicolour sculpture you could step into, multi-coloured cubes and pulsating lights weaving through the landscape.

Adriana Marques, Head of Thamesmead Cultural Strategy for Peabody, said:

“The idea to hold a light festival came from local residents as a way of bringing Thamesmead’s diverse communities together and addressing isolation in winter. We had over 1,300 people come to the event, of which 95% were local residents. The event was a great success with lots of local food, live local music and family activities for all ages. I was truly moved by how friendly and warm the atmosphere was. We received such positive feedback from those who attended that we are looking into how we can develop this for future years.”

This was our first cultural event of 2020 to be held in Thamesmead. Culture is a crucial part of our long-term regeneration plans for Thamesmead where we will work local residents to “make great culture part of everyday life”.
